Heal Your Thyroid with Essential Oils to Heal the Liver

By Jodi Cohen

I am often asked about essential oils for the thyroid.

As you may know, your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that produces and releases hormones to help regulate your metabolism, your emotions, your brain function, and almost all the other processes in your body.

Thyroid issues, including hypo-thyroid, hyper-thyroid and auto immune thyroid conditions like Hashimotos, are related to stress, gut and detoxification issues.  Supporting these underlying issues often help balance the thyroid so that it can heal.

That said, I have found it to be most effective to start by supporting the liver and organs of detoxification.  Here’s why:  when you start to heal the gut, you often kill off bad bacteria and bugs that then need to leave your body.  When your liver is sluggish and not able to remove toxins as quickly, these toxins don’t leave the body.  Instead, they can recirculate in your system and create more problems.   Similarly, when you reduce stress levels, you allow your body to drop into a healing state where it can release toxins.  Those toxins then need to be eliminated from the body, and supporting the liver and other organs of detoxification as a first step ensures that the elimination pathways are open.

Finally, a healthy liver allows for healthy assimilation of thyroid supporting foods and supplements.  A sluggish or congested liver can make you more sensitive or reactive to food and supplements that otherwise might support your thyroid healing.  So supporting the liver as a first step opens the door to additional thyroid supporting options.

How the Liver Supports the Thyroid

Your liver plays a critical role in balancing the hormones in your body, including your thyroid hormone.  The liver develops and metabolizes the level of thyroid hormones.  It is necessary for converting T4 to the active T3 hormone, and regulates their effect on the endocrine system.

The liver is also your primary organ of detoxification, helping to rid the system of excess thyroid hormones.  If your liver is overwhelmed, overburdened or otherwise impaired, it can lead to toxic backlog and compromise the function of the thyroid.  For example, if your liver is impaired, your body may be unable to convert T4 to the active T3 hormone correctly.  Sufficient levels of active T3 are necessary for your body to grow hair, boost metabolism, and create more energy!

3 Essential Oils for the Thyroid

Essential oils can be topically applied to help return the liver, gall bladder and lymphatic system to balance so they can function optimally in supporting the thyroid.

1. Liver™

Liver™ helps support optimal health and vitality of the liver.  If you are sensitive to smells (smoke, perfume, etc.) and or chemicals or are easily intoxicated or hung over, your liver is likely in stress and would benefit from support.  Apply Liver™ directly over the liver (right side beneath the breast) 2-3 times daily.  You can also combine Liver™ blend with castor oil – just add 3 drops of Liver™ to 1 tsp of castor oil and rub it over the liver before bed.  Castor oil is notoriously messy, so you can either: (1) cover it with a piece of flannel and plastic wrap and apply heat from a hot water bottle (avoid the electricity of heating pads) for 20-30 minutes,  (2) wear a ratty t-shirt and let your body heat work it’s magic (3) climb into an Epsom salt bath with the castor oil and Liver™ oil and benefit from layering 3 healing strategies at the same time.

2.  Gall Bladder™

Your Gall Bladder™ is responsible for storing, releasing, and concentrating bile, a fluid produced in the liver that helps our body break down fat as well as carry toxins and old hormones out of the body. When our bile becomes too viscous, it doesn’t flow as well and toxins (like old hormones) don’t move out of the system and often get reabsorbed.

This can be caused by a very low fat diet, too much toxicity in the body, estrogen dominance, or chronic stress. The gallbladder is also another organ that holds onto negative emotions like resentment, anger, bitterness, and hate.  Some indicators that the Gall Bladder™ blend might be a helpful blend for you would be motion sickness, floating stools, avoiding fatty food like meat or if you do eating fatty food, needing to use the restroom shortly after, pain between shoulder blades, subtle headache above eyes.  For more ways to support the gall bladder, read this article.

To support the optimal flow of bile and allow toxins to flow out of the body, apply 2-3 drops of Gall Bladder™ underneath the ribs at the Gall Bladder (right side, underneath the ribs.  If you lean forward, it is easier to apply under the ribs).

3.  Liver Support™ for Emotions

The Detoxification process  occurs on a physical, spiritual and emotional level and can help uncover and express feelings, especially hidden frustrations, anger, resentments, or fear.  Often, the more toxins a person releases, the more stored emotion that is also released.   Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt noticed this pattern in his work with thousands of chronically ill patients and noted that “for each unresolved psycho-emotional conflict or trauma there is an equivalent of stored toxins and an equivalent of pathogenic microorganisms. To successfully detoxify the body the three issues have to be addressed simultaneously.”

It is important that these emotions are allowed to be processed and released to avoid causing additional stress that would undermine the detoxification process and essential oils make excellent tools to help gentle release and detoxify emotions.  For example, our key organ of detoxification, the Liver, holds onto traumatic experiences and negative emotions, like anger, impatience, resentment  and frustration creating emotional blocks cause the liver to become sluggish.  Processing and releasing these negative emotions are an important step in opening the drainage pathways.  Learn more about importance of processing unresolved emotions HERE.

To help you move through and release anger and negative emotions from the cells of the liver, apply 2 -3 drops of Liver Support™ over the liver, the heart or around the earlobes.  You can also gently inhale Liver Support™ for 3 – 7 breaths, breathing out any negative emotions on the exhale. Liver Support™ contains several oils like German Chamomile that help both detoxify the liver and dispel anger stuck in the liver.  For more tips on how to detoxify emotions, read this article.
