Healing Headaches with Essential Oils

by Jodi Cohen

Not a day goes by that someone in my life – a friend, a client, a Vibrant Blue customer, or child of a friend – asks me about healing headaches with Essential Oils.

I don’t know about you, but I really think headaches are the worst.  Enough to make you want to crawl into bed, pull up the covers and cry.

While traveling to Dallas this past weekend, I got a doozy of a headache.  While I would hardly call it a fun experience, it gave me great personal insight into how to heal headaches with essential oils and how well our oils actually work for pain relief.

Essential oils have many attributes that make them particularly well suited to offer headache relief because of their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to cross the blood brain barrier.

While headaches can result from a variety of triggers, a key cause is inflammation, which dilates and constricts the blood flow within the brain. The repeated dilation and constriction causes the nerve walls, which are sensitive to pain, to stretch, resulting in the discomfort of a headache.

Healing Headaches with Essential Oils

I like to test everything on myself before recommending it to others, so I laid out all the oils that I believe are helpful for headaches including:

Migraine Relief™— This blend of Basil, Marjoram, Lavender, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile, and Helichrysum provide relief from inflammation and associated pain. To use, rub a drop on the temples can ease the pain and throbbing or apply it to the forehead or neck with a cold compress.

Gall Bladder™ — In Eastern medicine, the gallbladder meridian traverses the part of the head where you feel a headache.  Following that logic, anything that causes the gallbladder to be congested, or not function well, could cause a disruption in that meridian pathway and lead to a headache.  From a reverse engineering standpoint that supporting the gall bladder could ease stress on the gall bladder meridian and with it, the experience of a headache. The Gallbladder blend also contains Chamomile which is known to cross the blood brain barrier, reduce inflammation and help calm headaches.  Read more about how healing the Gall Bladder can reduce headaches.

Anti-Inflammatory™  — This great blend includes several oils with powerful anti-inflammatory properties  like Frankincense, Dill, and Ginger.  Reducing inflammation can reduce headache pain.

Nerve Repair™ — Great for relieving pain and easing inflammation.  Contains Helichrysum Essential Oil which is an especially powerful anti-inflammatory oil.

Parasympathetic™ – This refreshing blend of clove and lime helps to relieve headache pain, both when applied behind the earlobe on the vagus nerve and on the temples.

Lymph™ —  Lymph congestion is common with any kind of toxicity of infection.  This congestion can add pressure to the brain fluid resulting in a headache.  Lymph Flow helps to move lymph fluid and reduce congestion, often relieving headache symptoms.  Apply to lymph nodes on neck, under arms and on pelvis.

Adrenal™  — Blood Sugar dysregulation and resulting high cortisol levels can result in chronic inflammation leading to headaches.  Balancing the adrenals and reducing cortisol levels can reduce headache pain.

Lavender™ —  known for anti-inflammatory and sedative properties. Lavender Oil is a good oil to use if you are trying to alleviate a headache during the evening/nighttime hours.

Peppermint™ contains a significant amount of menthol which is known for helping to relax and ease tension headaches and muscular aches and pains. Peppermint Oil is quite stimulating and may interfere with sleeping.

I smelled all of the potential oils then applied a few drops of the Migraine Relief™ blend that smelled the best to me to my forehead.  It began to work immediately.  Literally, within a few minutes the headache was completely gone.

In addition to using oils to help alleviate the symptom of a headache, I encourage you to look to the root cause which often has to do with food sensitivities or intolerances.
