Essential Oils for the Ears, Nose and Throat

by Jodi Cohen

Topically applied essential oils can help support healthy sinus drainage, and with it the organs both above your collar — including your ears, nose, throat, mouth, jaw, gums, tonsils, and mastoid bone – and all downstream organs.

Your sinuses are always draining mucus down the back of the throat and into the stomach, which means that supporting your sinuses not only supports the organs above the collar, but also prevents pathologies from developing in the body.

If left unsupported, issues in the sinuses can contribute to gut issues including leaky gut, and digestive issues like bloating, gas, IBS, GERD, nausea or vomiting.

Sinus issues may also contribute to lung issues like asthma, allergies, respiratory challenges and autoimmune issues like arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

Symptoms Related to Sinus Congestion

Your organs above your collar work with your sinuses to drain fluid and remove toxins. If there is sinus congestion, symptoms can occur in the following organs:

  • Ears: Itchy, draining, excess wax, plugged, watery inside, hard to pop open.
  • Throat: Chronically sore, snoring, dripping or tickle feeling down the back of the throat, clearing the throat frequently.
  • Nose: Frequently blowing nose, Chronic dripping of mucus, especially after eating. Inability to breathe through a nostril, especially at night.
  • Tonsils: Chronically swollen.
  • Sinuses: Chronic pressure, congestion, snorting, needs antihistamines.
  • Teeth: Sensitive to cold or pressure, cavities, cracking, root canals.
  • Gums: Receding, pockets bleed too easily. • Mouth: bad breath, patches of discoloration, recurring sores.
  • Tongue: Coated white, black, brown, mottled, fissure.
  • Jawbone: Cavitation, abscess, infection found by cone-beam commonly at extraction sites or root canals.

How Toxins in the Sinuses Impact the Body

Your sinuses serve as the first line of defense for your respiratory system.  This means that your sinuses and nasopharynx pathway acts as a filter which prevents allergens, bacteria and other harmful substances from reaching the lungs.

Nasal irritants like smoke, mold, pollen, dust, gasoline fumes, dander (animal hair, fur and feathers) or other airborne toxins can be inhaled and  irritate the mucosal membranes of the nasal cavity, sinuses, and throat, leading to inflammation.  Your sinuses secrete mucus that lines the nasal passage, thereby protecting it from external agents (pollutants or pathogens)

Swelling can then block your sinus openings, preventing the good things – like nutrient rich oxygen – from getting in and preventing toxins, pollutants, pathogens, such as mycotoxins, viruses, bacteria and even mucus from draining properly, impacting immune health.

There are so many toxins in the air, that just breathing in pollutants can be harmful to your sinuses.  Toxins from the sinuses or ears can travel down the back of the throat, otherwise known as “post-nasal drip”.  These toxins can land in the lungs or stomach.

If your gums or teeth are demonstrating signs of ill health, they could also be contributing to gut challenges.  Pathogenic bacteria causing cavities and receding gums in the mouth are swallowed continuously all day down the throat, re-infecting the body.

Similarly, infections in the jawbone can leak into your bloodstream and travel throughout the body.  These infections can then leak into the lymphatic system and travel throughout the body. If you feel congestion in lymphatic points in your tonsils, armpits, occiput, or neck, you might consider supporting your sinuses.

Essential Oils to Support Sinus Health

Essential oils are an ideal remedy to help support sinus health as you can literally inhale them to flush out irritants and thin excessive mucus for immediate relief of congestion and pressure.

More specifically, essential oils can easily travel through your nose and loosen mucous and promote drainage to help clear out toxins and flush out irritants.

Sadly, most nasal care products are not naturally sourced. They’re made from ingredients that are harmful to the mucosa and the good bacteria that are there to protect you.

Essential oils are derived from natural ingredients that can naturally clear and open the nasal passages and support the relief of sinus pressure from chronic sinus infections and/or sinus issues to supports clearer and easier breathing.

Essential oils are also antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and possess decongestant and antihistamine properties to help resolve infectious organisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungus in the sinuses and nasal cavity.

Suggested Essential Oils to Support Sinus Health

You can open your sinuses and support drainage with essential oils.

Sinus Support™

Sinus Support™ blend helps clear the blockages that could be lining the walls of your nasal passages and throat. Sinus Support™ works as local decongestants that break up mucus stimulate drainage of the nose and sinuses and relieve head pressure.

Sinus Support™ is designed for aromatic and topical use. If using topically, we recommend apply 2 – 3 drops to a Q-tip and swabbing the inside of the nasal passages 2 – 6 times daily.  For optimal effectiveness, you can leave the Q-tip in the nasal passage for up to 20 minutes. Try to relax and focus on breathing through the nose.  This helps to open sinus passageways and it my first step toward sinus health.

Histamine Balance™

My other favorite remedy for supporting the sinuses is Histamine Balance™ , which can help modulate the production of excess histamine that can fill your sinus cavity with mucus.

As you may know, Histamine is a chemical compound released by the cells in response to injury, allergic or inflammatory reactions, causing contraction of smooth muscle and dilation of capillaries.  While the release of histamine is a normal defense mechanism, an exaggerated histamine response can bind to cell receptor sites, causing irritation and chronic inflammation. This inflammatory response can cause sneezing, runny nose, watery, red, itchy eyes, rashes, breathing troubles such as wheezing, severe coughs, asthma, or hiccups. The goal is to balance, not block, the histamine response as histamine performs critical functions in body. The essential oils in the Histamine Balance™ blend are uniquely suited to help modulate excess histamine excretion, balancing histamine levels and helping to reset the immune response and reduce allergic reactions and support healthy sinus function.

Applying 2 – 3 drops of Sinus Support™ and/or Histamine Balance™ to a Q-tip and swabbing the inside of the nasal passages 2 – 6 times daily can help with nasal irrigation.  For optimal effectiveness, you can leave the Q-tip in the nasal passage for up to 20 minutes. Try to relax and focus on breathing through the nose.  This increases the speed and coordination of the cilia so they can more effectively remove the allergens and other sinus irritants.  This technique can significantly reduce the risk of sinus infections or dramatically improve symptoms and improve the time to recovery.

Lymph drainage to the neck and face helps to decongest the painful swelling in the sinus mucous membranes and nasal cavity and it also increases the rate at which pathogens are filtered through the lymph nodes in the neck.

Congestion or inflammation any part of the neck – including the veins, lymphatic tissue or vagus nerve – can compromise sinus drainage. Your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump and lymphatic fluid can accumulate and stagnate.

To enhance lymphatic flow and drainage, generously apply 2- 3 drops of Lymph™ around the sides of the neck and under the arm pits to improve sinus drainage and relieve congestion. Lymph™ blend is designed for liberal usage.  You can also apply Parasympathetic™ on the vagus nerve and Circulation on the neck to support vagus nerve and vascular health.

Fascia Release™

Your lymphatic network is located within your fascia right under the skin.  The fascial system is essentially a glide system and your lymphatic is designed to glide within the fascial system.

Supporting the fascia helps support healthy lymph flow by helping to squeeze the lymphatic vessels and push the lymph through the system which helps support sinus drainage.

The essential oils in the Fascia Release™ blend are uniquely formulated to unravel deeply held tensions, constrictions and energetic blockages in your tissues to reduce pain, improve blood and lymphatic circulation and release fear, repressed emotions, and tension held in the body (organs, muscles, tendons, bones and joints) or the mind.
