Working through Fear with Essential Oils

When I was in second grade, there was an older boy at my bus stop who used to threaten to kick me in the shins almost every day.  He terrified me.  So much so, that I often wore my soccer shin guards under my pants as a preventative measure.

In hindsight, I don’t think he actually would have ever kicked me.  It was just the ongoing threat and the fear that it created in me that he was after.  My fear of him gave him power over me.

This was a pattern I would repeat throughout my life.  I didn’t stand up to the mean girls in high school who teased my classmates for fear they would then bully me.  I allowed an abusive boss to make unreasonable demands for fear of being fired.  Most recently, I allowed a colleague to claim credit for and diminish my work for fear of his wrath, or perhaps fear of my own success.

I was letting my fear drive my decisions.  Not only was it not serving me, it was starting to impact my health.

In Chinese medicine, fear and the difficulty letting go of emotions is often associated with the kidneys. The role of the kidneys is to release physical, and emotional, waste from our systems to keep our bodies in balance.  When we hold onto emotions, like fear, it creates an imbalance and can lead to disharmony in the body.

It is also worth noting that the adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and release cortisol and adrenaline into the system in response to fear.  Fear can either motivate us into fight or flight action or freeze us into inaction.

In my case, fear had paralyzed and immobilized me.  Stuck energy can be the most toxic.  So I spoke my truth and asked for what I needed.  This set off a hail storm of rage from the other party.  It was very mean spirited and truly awful.  Far worse than I could have imagined, but far better than continuing to live in fear.

 

Overcoming Fear with Essential Oils

I am now on the other side of that fear, slowly healing and finding my own voice away from the influence of others and the fear of speaking my truth.   I am grateful for the sources of strength and support in my life and for several essential oil blends that helped me through those darkest hours including:

Parasympathetic®:  My go-to blend for balancing my body and emotions.  A tiny dab behind the ear on the vagal nerve helps me drop into the parasympathetic state.

Uplift™:  This powerful blend is designed to increase feelings of strength, courage, and self-esteem in the face of adversity.   It contains a significant amount of Ylang Ylang which helps open the breathing pathways to slow the body down.  The blend also stimulates the limbic part of the brain, elevating the mind and helping to overcome stress and despair.

Lavender™: the all-around best balancing oil for the nervous system and mind.  It has a soothing and relaxing effect on the body and helps calm negative emotions, like fear.

Frankincense™slows down and deepens breathing which helps the process of slowing down the body.  It also stills and clarifies the mind, boosting focus and concentration to help dissipate fear.

 

These oils can all be topically applied, smelled or added to the bath.  I love adding them to an Epsom salt bath to help clearing the system of adrenalin build-up and support detoxification and the kidneys.
