Top 6 Essential Oils for Surviving Cold and Flu Season

By Jodi Cohen

How are you feeling today? Did you wake up with a stuffy nose, a runny nose or perhaps a cough? I sure hope no one in your family is suffering from coughing, sneezing, wheezing or just feeling a little under the weather. Perhaps you’d like to know my secrets for keeping my family healthy during the cold and flu season?

Well, then today is your lucky day. Here are my top 6 Essential Oils for colds and flu season.

Essential Oils for Colds and Flu

Immune Support™ – This blend traces its origins to the bubonic plague when thieves were stealing the gold teeth out of the mouths of the dead. When they were apprehended, they were offered a lesser sentence in exchange for sharing how they avoided the illness. Their secret was this blend of hot oils that strengthen the immune system against flu, colds, and coughs as well as infections, viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites, and microbes. To prevent illness or nip it in the bud once it starts, apply Immune Support™ 2- 3 times daily on the throat (diluted) or the bottom of the feet. To keep the family healthy, rub the oil on the bottom of the feet prior to bed (kids can even be asleep when you apply it).

Thymus™ – The thymus gland, located in front of the heart, plays an important role in the immune system, maturing infection-fighting white blood cells made in the bone marrow. Stimulating the thymus by gently tapping on the gland (thymus thumping) or using Thymus™ essential oils is thought to increase the release of white blood cells. To stimulate immune function against infections, viruses and bacteria, apply 2-3 drops on the thymus (on breastbone at third rib) in a clockwise motion for 30 seconds and then stimulate the thymus by gently tapping.

Spleen™ – The spleen, located in the left upper abdomen, is an important part of the immune system. It helps fight certain bacteria, like those that cause pneumonia and meningitis and serves as a reservoir for blood, filtering and purifying the blood and lymph fluid that flow through it. A damaged spleen makes you more susceptible to infections. You can support the spleen by applying 2- 3 drops of Spleen™ blend over the spleen (left side of the body, under breast) or around the earlobes.

Lymph™ – The lymphatic system is the body’s first line of defense against disease. It includes lymph nodes (with clusters found in the neck, chest, underarms, abdomen, and groin). Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system does not have its own central pump — it only moves as the muscles squeeze it along. If the lymphatic system becomes stagnant, waste and excessive toxins accumulate, impacting immunity. To increase circulation of white blood cells within the lymphatic system for optimal removal of waste from the cells, apply 2- 3 drops of Lymph™ each to sides of neck, lymph nodes under arms and around inguinal ligament (bikini line area – think where your leg creases when you lift it). This blend can be used liberally.

Breathe™ – Opens and soothes the airways and tissues of the respiratory system. It also reduces inflammation to support and relieve congestion, colds, flu, bronchitis, coughs, sore throats, sinus infections, pneumonia and asthma. To apply, dilute Breathe™ with another oil, like castor oil, coconut oil or olive oil and rub 1- 2 drops topically on throat and upper chest. You can also put a few drops on the pillowcase for respiratory conditions or apply a hot wet towel compress over the throat and keep it on for about 15 minutes. Put a few drops on the pillowcase at night. This oil can feel hot, so we do not recommend applying it undiluted to the skin.

Histamine Balance™This is my favorite oil for anti-histamine properties and it can work magic with stuffy noses. Just apply a small amount to a Q-Tip and rub it around the inside of the nose. This will often trigger the release of a lot of mucus followed by relief of symptoms. Blue Tansy is the active ingredient in this oil and has wonderful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties that are included in our Heart™, Uplift™, Calm and Liver Support™ blends. Any of these oils can be applied inside the nasal cavity for relief from congestion.
