Surrendering Control Issues with Essential Oils

by Jodi Cohen

I have this fantasy version of myself.  She is very relaxed, easy and super flexible.  She doesn’t have a pre-determined  agenda and therefore never gets upset when things don’t go according to her perceived plan.  She doesn’t care what movie you see or what restaurant you go to, even if there is nothing on the menu she can really eat.  She’ll just order lettuce with a side of olive oil and a cup of tea. Surrendering control issues with Essential Oils can help support us as we release these unpleasant emotions that can undermine our health.

I try to channel this relaxed version of myself whenever I feel my urge to control kick into gear.  It has been an interesting experiment, letting go of control, especially in light of the recent election.

I have been observing my friends, loved ones and Facebook acquaintances  protesting, complaining and actively expressing their anger, fear and grief in reaction to an election result that they cannot control.

Repairing Control Issues with Essential Oils

I totally get it.  My inner control freak has complete compassion.  It is really, really hard to accept the things you cannot change.   My mind often goes to the quote:

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

I first encountered that quote on a program at a funeral.  I was 16 and my friend Bob Kennedy had just been killed in a car accident.  It was my first introduction to loss and I didn’t know how to process it.  I was sad, confused and angry all at the same time.  Overwhelmed by the concept of death, I focused instead on the quote, hoping it would help me accept what I could not change.

It didn’t.

But the concept that I could accept the things that I could not change was intriguing to me.  That I could let go of trying to control things.  That when life took a turn that I had neither desired or envisioned, I could surrender to it without fighting.

I spent many years trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to practice this concept of accepting the things that I could not change.  The deaths of other friends and loved ones, often before their time.  The rejections from schools, boys and potential employers.  The introduction of GMO foods and mandatory vaccinations.

So much exposure to things that I could not change, and yet despite years of practice, I never seemed to master the acceptance piece, until recently.

The reaction to the recent election has been intense, with outpourings of anger, grief and fear in conversations, on the news and in social media.  While I understand the disappointment, I also see how letting go of this disappointment and anger can be extremely beneficial for your health.

When we hold onto anger, resentment or fear, it is a little bit like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.  It doesn’t serve us.  But at the same time, neither does stuffing our emotions.  We need to release them in whatever way, shape or form speaks to us.

This is one area is where essential oils can really help.  They can help support us as we release these unpleasant emotions that can undermine our health.

Surrender Control with Large Intestine Support

Our large intestine lets go of those things that don’t serve us. Physically, it lets go of waste after our upper digestive system has taken all the necessary nutrients out of the food we eat.  Emotionally, it allows us to let go of patterns of negative thinking, destructive emotions, and spiritual blockages that prevent us from being our best.

To help release control and move through transitions, apply 2- 3 drops of Large Intestine Support™ blend over the large intestine, around the ears or on the bottom of the feet.

Release Anger with Liver Support

Anger is a powerful emotion.  It is often a response to fear that is projected onto others, but boomerangs back to throw you out of balance.  In Chinese medicine, our anger is stored in our liver.  Vibrant Blue Liver Support™ helps support the release of anger, including frequent irritation, impatience, resentment or frustration, being critical of yourself or others, control issues, an inability to express your feelings, feelings of not feeling heard, not feeling loved, not being recognized or appreciated.  Just place the bottle under your nose and breathe deeply, fully inhaling the oil for 3 – 7 breathes.  It helps you breathe into and work through the emotion.  You can also apply it over the liver or around the ankles as this is often an area where we hold resistance to moving forward in life.  Start at the back of the ankle and apply under the ankle bone around to the front and back under the other ankle bone, all while allowing yourself to release challenging emotions.

Release Fear with Kidney Support

In Chinese medicine, feelings of fear and paranoia can be held in the kidneys impairing function.   Applying Vibrant Blue Oils Kidney Support™ over the kidneys (one inch up and out from belly button), back of neck, or around the outside of earlobes can help us flow through fear.

Release Grief with Lung Support

Lung Support allows for the gentle release of emotional grief that so often accompanies growth.  In order to grow, we have to leave behind old behavior and thought patterns and sometimes individuals, places and possessions.  There is often a deep sense of loss and grief associated with the process of letting go.  Lung Support™ helps us release our grief so often attached to negative experiences.  You can inhale the oil the oil through the nose, letting the oxygen flow deeply into the lungs, then exhale or apply directly over the lungs.
