Welcome to 2025.
I love that the new year is the time to set new goals. Intention is a practice that helps ensure that you achieve your goals.
A clear intention practice can be the difference between the new year’s resolutions that get implemented and the ones you give up on before the week ends.
Intention can also be a powerful way to amplify the benefits of essential oils or other healthy lifestyle choices.
What is Intention?
Intention can be defined as “a determination to act in a particular way” but it’s really about the end result you seek. It’s about setting a goal for yourself to achieve and make it happen. Your thoughtful and intentional choice to put your focus and energy on this desired outcome is your intention. The more powerful the intention and energy you dedicate to it, the more likely it is to happen. While this includes intentionally reviewing your goals, it also means establishing actionable daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly rituals and routines to help you work toward those goals.
For example, if your goal is to lose weight, you might schedule in time to move your body, or set a goal to add in healthier choices, like vegetables, to your daily diet. Try to pick easy, actionable, and manageable goals that you can actually do. If you set a goal that is too ambitious, it will be hard to execute, and it will just make you feel bad. Instead, set a manageable goal that you know you can achieve, like starting your day with lemon water (good for metabolism and detoxification) or remembering to dab Parasympathetic® essential oil blend behind your earlobe on your mastoid bone at least twice a day.
Clear, positive, and productive intention helps you focus your energy and mind on the baby steps that add up to the big changes. The stronger your intention, aim or purpose, the easier it is to make things happen. It’s almost like once you mentally decide on the direction you want to move, the universe shows up to support you. That support can come in a variety of ways, from clear steps that you need to take to achieve your goal to helpful people who are able to support you in your new direction.
Intention as a Blueprint
Intention is the blueprint of your experiences and the reality you create through your chosen aligned action. Intentions originate mentally and emotionally and can be set silently, verbally, or through writing. You can use several tools to turn your intention into your reality. Two of my favorite intention-setting tools are blue cards and blue oils (Vibrant Blue Oils to be specific):
Blue Cards
In order to serve as a blueprint, your intention needs to be clear—this serves as an anchor of focus and a to serve as a blueprint, your intention needs to be clear—this serves as an anchor of focus and a reminder of precisely what you are creating. You also need an easy way to focus your intention on these goals every day. My friend Kelly Kennedy taught me about “blue cards” or, more aptly, blue index cards on which you write your intentions in blue ink. Kelly explained that intention is a clear signal to the universe, your subconscious, and your conscious mind, and blue ink speaks to the subconscious mind, so writing your intentions on blue cards with blue ink and reading them daily at heightened levels of emotion—gratitude, great joy, etc.—helps you intentionally focus on your goal and channel your energy (both conscious and subconscious) to help you achieve it. Blue cards help you move forward from hoping for something to actively working towards accomplishing it. Kelly also recommends adhering to the following blue card rules:
- Write in all caps
- No Mistakes
- Use Positive Words
- Skip a line between sentences
- Detail specific measures
- Use positive and definitive language—avoid phrases like “I hope” or “I’d really like to,” as these phrases communicate lack and uncertainty. It is better to say something like, “Thank you for aligning me with…”
- Read with heightened emotions—Kelly suggests at twilight or post orgasm
In addition to targeting the subconscious, the color blue is associated with matters of communication and clarity. It is often associated with the throat chakra and speaking your truth. It may help you open yourself up to honest communication. The energy that blue provides allows you to be vulnerable without fear. Blue is a color connected to two huge parts of the natural world, deepening our connection with the universe. Blue also provides us with a sense of calm.
Try to read your blue cards twice daily as an intentional declaration of your determination and readiness to do the work needed to make your dreams come true.
Vibrant Blue Oils
Your sense of smell can be used to prompt your memory, enhance learning, support recall and form associations toYou can use your sense of smell to prompt your memory, enhance learning, support recall, and form associations to trigger a response based on the feeling attached to that association. For example, try inhaling the same scent you used while studying to enhance the ability to recall specific information. Smelling that particular scent will help you remember all that you learned.
Recent research details how smells pass through your nose and travel to parts of your brain associated with emotion and memory, like the thalamus, via the amygdala and the hippocampus.
Smell is one of the primal senses that affects your memory and brain function by interacting with its olfactory system. The olfactory cortex is part of the temporal lobe in your brain, which is responsible for processing sensory inputs. This part of the limbic system—the amygdala, responsible for our memories and emotions; the hypothalamus and hippocampus, responsible for associated learning—is why certain smells can produce a strong sense of nostalgia.
Scents correspond with our experiences through associated learning. Simply put, when you correlate a learning activity or emotional response with a particular smell, that smell will trigger recall of that event. Once our brain establishes that association, a conditioned response is triggered every time we encounter that smell. These deep neural connections can explain how scents cause psychological responses within us and can be used to our advantage.
For example, you can use scent to help imprint and Concentrate on the intention you want to set:
- Repeat your intention to yourself as you use your blend. Focus on positively achieving your desired outcome.
- Imprint the scent in your nose so that you associate it with achieving your goal and subtly reminding yourself of your intention.
- Use your intention aromatherapy blend as you follow your intention towards achieving your goal or each time you feel yourself faltering on your journey.
You can use the following essential oils to help enhance your focus and amplify your intentions, ground and calm your nervous system, and improve your heart space.
Your prefrontal cortex (the area behind your forehead) helps improve focus and processing speed. The more precise, focused, and specific you are about your intentions, the easier it will be to turn your goals into your reality. Attention energizes, and intention transforms. Whatever you put your attention on will grow stronger in your life. Whatever you take your attention away from will wither, disintegrate, and disappear,” according to Deepak Chopra (in his book, “The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success”). Intention describes something you desire to take place in the future, and your attention helps you focus on what you can do to make that intention a reality.
Applying essential oils on the forehead helps increase blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, which research shows can help improve attention and cognition. Focus™ blend contains essential oils like Rosemary, which includes the chemical constituent 1.8-cineole, shown in research to improve speed and accuracy on cognitive tests. Apply 2-3 drops of Focus™ over your temples 2-3 times daily or as needed during moments where additional focus is required. You can also put a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball and hold it where you can smell it. As you smell the blend, try to have the intention that the blend can help you focus your thoughts and energy to devise the best strategies to help you reach your goals.
Parasympathetic for Grounding
Grounding your energy helps you get calm, clear, and focused. It allows your brain to shift from selective attention and access your higher cognitive function and intuition.
Essential oils can help you ground and return your body to balance to better focus on and execute your intentions. Essential oils, especially those derived from grounded plants like trees, are intrinsically grounded through their root structure into the earth. Essential oils of bark, roots, grasses, needles, and plant resin also help pull your energy centers down into the earth. Plants that grow under the earth are entrained with the earth’s energies. As a result, stones, root vegetables, or essential oils from root plants that share space with the planet match the earth’s frequency and can be used for grounding. Rock, crystals, and minerals can hold a solid vibration, so when you hold one in your hand or place it near your body, you must change your frequency to match that of the rock or mineral. This is one reason that crystals are so popular for grounding.
Natural scents, like essential oils derived from plants, also carry a vibration. Smelling essential oils forces you to entrain your energy with the plant and helps connect you to nature and ground you. Calming your nervous system helps the body ground.
The Lime oil in the Parasympathetic® blend can help promote emotional grounding, encouraging a balance between the heart and mind, the connection that enables you to ground. Apply Parasympathetic® over the vagus nerve (behind the earlobe on the mastoid bone).
Heart™ for heartfelt emotion and emotional charge.
Heartfelt emotion—when you feel the emotion associated with your clear and specific thought profoundly and sincerely—turbocharges your intention! The heartfelt aspect means the emotional energy is coming from the heart. Energies that flow from the heart are especially powerful when combined with the energies of your focused thought.
Heart™ enhances heartfelt emotion, compassion, and support, integrating and resetting all body systems, including supporting feelings of open-heartedness, expansiveness, and receptivity while mitigating loneliness, sadness, and grief.
The heart integrates and balances the physical, emotional, and mental body, providing blood to every cell and every organ. It also serves as a complex information processing center, influencing brain function, the nervous system, the hormonal system, and most of the body’s major organs.
When any body parts aren’t functioning optimally, the heart has to work harder. For example, when the body is in a state of stress, it needs more oxygen, increasing the heart rate. The heart is our body’s reset button. Still, a state of constant stress can fatigue the heart and compromise our ability to reset, leading to inflammation, infections, toxicity, and heart disease. By returning the heart to balance, we support the cardiovascular and circulatory systems, regenerate the heart’s structure, and help reset the homeostatic mechanism for the entire body.
The Heart™ blend contains a proprietary combination of organic and/or wild-crafted essential oils that help you show love to others and yourself.
Finally, you can also set your intention, asking that significant changes only manifest for your highest good and that they integrate as gently and efficiently as possible.
