Kill Caffeine Cravings with Essential Oils

By Jodi Cohen

A pair of hands gently holding a saucer with a pink rim, which cradles a steaming cup of coffee with a creamy froth, all presented on a clean white surface.

To kick off the new year on a healthy note, I decided to take a little break from caffeine.  Guess what?  It’s been really, really hard!  I didn’t even realize I was so addicted.

I completely relied on caffeine to help me wake up in the morning and perk up in the afternoon.  In the midst of my withdrawal symptoms, I decided to do a little research on what caffeine was so addictive.  Here’s what I found:

Caffeine provokes the release of adrenaline.  That’s right, for those of us with tired and overworked adrenals, caffeine helps us squeeze out that extra energy to make us feel, awake, alert, happy.

Can you guess why?  Because the chemicals in caffeine also trigger the release of happy hormones — dopamine, and serotonin.   Who doesn’t like to be happy?

I personally love coffee.  I love the smell, I love the taste, and I love the feel of holding a warm, yummy cup in my hand.  It feels downright decadent.  And so hard to give up.  It’s like cutting off a limb.

But I did it, because I realized that caffeine wasn’t helping my adrenals to heal.  It was just forcing them to work harder and at some point they were going to run out of steam.

So coffee and I took a little time out from each other.  And I missed her.  A lot.  And craved her even more.

It gave me a lot of time to play with different solutions to get over my bad cravings.  And I tried a lot of things.  Teas.  The one I like the best is Numi Organic Tea Chocolate Rooibos blend because it is yummy and I really like drinking something warm and yummy in the morning.  While it was nice to replace one warm beverage with another, it really didn’t help those caffeine cravings. Breaking Up with caffeine using Essential Oils can help make the transition easier.

Breaking Up with Caffeine

But luckily, I know a little bit about essential oils.  And that’s what really helped.  Especially the Adrenal® blend which also gives the adrenals a little perk and the minty blends like Energize™ and Lymph Flow™.  I thought it was interesting that the Adrenal® blend really helped me and also played around with some herbs that are known to support the adrenals, including ashwaganda, rehnemia and licorice.  For me the Rehmannia really seemed to curb the caffeine cravings and the mint bolstered my energy.

So to recap, my 3 part strategy for kicking caffeine includes:

  1. Yummy tea to replace the hot drink
  2. Adrenal support in the form of Adrenal® and herbs
  3. Energizing essential oils like Energize™ and Lymph Flow™ helped carry me through the toughest moments of my caffeine break up.
