Kill Inflammation with Essential Oils

By Jodi Cohen

Inflammation is a normal process that occurs when your body launches a series of immune reactions where white blood cells and chemicals are sent to the injured area to protect you from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Essential Oils for inflammation can help when your inflammatory responses exceed what is necessary.

Oils for Inflammation

While some level of inflammation is necessary to help protect and heal your body from an injury or infection, our inflammatory responses often exceed what is physiologically appropriate, contributing to damage to the tissues of the  joints, the arteries, the organs, and, perhaps most concerning, the brain (Read More about Brain Inflammation HERE).

Chronic and Prolonged Inflammation Can Contribute to Disease

If your immune system mistakenly triggers an inflammatory response when no threat is present, it can lead to excess inflammation in your body, this inflammatory state can trigger conditions such as asthma, leaky gut, allergies, autoimmune disease like multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, or rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease  and even Alzheimer’s or cancer.  Some examples of inflammation correlating with disease include:

  • Inflammation of your heart (myocarditis): Shortness of breath or fluid retention
  • Inflammation of the small tubes that transport air to your lungs: Asthma attack
  • Inflammation of your kidneys (nephritis): High blood pressure or kidney failure
  • Inflammation of your large intestine (colitis): Cramps and diarrhea
  • Inflammation of the Small Intestine (Leaky gut): Food Allergies
  • Inflammation of the Brain (Neuro Inflammation): Dementia

When inflammation becomes chronic, there are often no symptoms until a loss of function occurs. This is because chronic inflammation is low-grade and systemic, often silently damaging tissues.

What Causes Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation can be caused by a malfunctioning, over-reactive immune system, or it may be due to an underlying problem that your body is attempting to fight off.  This process can go on for years without noticeable symptoms, until a disease develops.  Many of these “problems” are actually due to an unhealthy lifestyle.  The following can increase your risk of chronic inflammation:

  • Being  overweight
  • Eating a poor diet
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Autoimmunity
  • Blood Sugar Dysregulation  ( including Hypo- glycemia, Insulin Resistance or Diabetes)
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking, Alcohol or  Processed Foods
  • Toxicity
  • Long-term infections
  • Gum disease
  • Stress

Essential Oils to Help Heal Inflammation

Anti-Inflammatory:  Anti-inflammatory blend is designed to soothe inflammation and to assist in the regeneration of damaged or stressed connective tissue. Anti-inflammatory blend works by drawing on the theory of dissonance to cancel out inflammation in the system (Read more about dissonance HERE) This blend contains several essential oils known for their anti-inflammatory properties.  It is designed to reduce inflammation, re-balance the brain, and encourage regeneration of damaged or stressed cells and tissues that have been chronically inflamed or acutely inflamed. Apply to areas of the body that are where inflammation is experienced or suspected, including the base of the skull or bottom of the feet.

Parasympathetic™: When applied to the vagus nerve, behind the ear lobe on mastoid bone, the Parasympathetic™ blend stimulates the vagus nerve and improves vagal tone.  Research has shown strong decrease in inflammatory symptoms from stimulation of three minutes a day.  This is due, in part to the fact that the vagus nerve communicates directly with the immune system, and the body’s inflammatory response, through a neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Consequently, stimulation of the vagus nerve Parasympathetic™ blend  can help treat diseases triggered by an inflammatory response.

We recommend applying the Parasympathetic™ blend to vagus nerve three times daily (ideally before meals). Research also shows that vagus nerve stimulation seems to restore the body’s natural balance. It reduces the over-production of the chemical messenger that causes chronic inflammation but does not affect healthy immune function, so the body can respond normally to infection.
