How Do Essential Oils Blends Work?

By Jodi Cohen

Three small bottles of essential oils placed on a rustic wooden surface surrounded by greenery and tiny white flowers.

Essential oils are extremely powerful as single oils, but there is something about combining single oils into blends that both amplifies and enhances the healing power of the oils. It is almost like a good marriage or friendship—the synergy of the two energies combined significantly enhances both individuals. Join me as I explain how Essential Oils blends work as an enhancement to single oils.

How Essential Oils Blends Work

You might think of single oils like individual instruments: a blend is more like a symphony where the single oils respond to each other and adjust their individual frequencies to form a harmonious, coherent, functional blend designed to serve a particular function, like balancing an organ system or region of the brain.

A single oil not commonly associated with a specific organ may work well in a blend because a compound acting alone can behave very differently in the balanced environment of an essential oil blend.

For example, the Parasympathetic® blend combines clove oil, which is highly stimulatory and contains high levels of the compound Eugenol, known for impressive health benefits, with lime essential oil, known to have the smallest molecules allowing it to easily permeate the skin.  When combined, these two oils form a powerful remedy that can quickly stimulate the nerve endings in the skin, which the triggers the vagal nerve to help you drop into the optimal rest and digest parasympathetic state.

In The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple, David Stewart writes that single oils can “adjust their vibrations to play in harmony with the rest of the family of compounds that define the blend.” Essential oil blends “resonate with body tissues at the frequencies intrinsic to their molecular spectrum as well as their resultant harmonic and beat frequencies. This increases your natural electromagnetic vibrations and restores coherence to your electric fields to produce healing and maintain wellness.”

He suggests that “we should maintain a certain level and spectrum of harmonic vibrations within our body to maintain health. When our electromagnetic frequencies fall below certain levels, we become susceptible to colds and flu.” We know that our lifestyle choices can support optimal health, including the quality of the food we eat, our thoughts, and our emotions. Positive thoughts and emotions, like those of love, joy, and peace elevate our health, while negative thoughts and emotions like anxiety, resentment, jealousy, and depression can bring us down. I find it interesting that Stewart credits essential oils as possessing the highest and most coherent measured frequencies of all natural substances.

Another viable theory, put forth by Essential Oils expert Robert Tisserand in his Therapeutic Foundations of Essential Oils Course, is that synergy could occur because the constituents of one oil may help the constituents of another oil penetrate through the cell membrane so the results are more effective. I believe this is why, when several single essential oils are synergistically combined for a specific healing intention, the result is often more powerful than the sum of its parts. The combination yields not only the power of the combined chemical constituents but also the synergy of how they interact together. This means that the respective powers of the individual oils change to enhance their energy.
