Essential Oils for Fascia Release

By Jodi Cohen

Your fascia is a system of connective tissue that provides structural support for all the tissues in your body, including your organs, muscles, tendons, bones and joints.

When your fascia is tight and constricted, it impacts function of the entire body and compromises your ability to heal. For example, chronic inflammation causes the protective layer of fascia tissue to harden, contributing to pain and muscle tension.

Fascia lies just below the skin so topically applying essential oils onto the skin allows for easy and immediate access to the fascia.  The skin is your largest organ and is relatively permeable to fat-soluble substances like essential oils. The molecules of essential oils are so small that they can pass through your skin into the capillaries and quickly be absorb into the bloodstream. From there, they can penetrate the thick, fibrous, constricted fascia, allowing the deep and constrained tissue to stretch and move as it is designed to function.

Topical supplements play an important role in supporting fascia health and recovery from inflammation. For example, essential oils easily penetrate layers of restricted fascia, creating warmth to break up congestion, increasing circulation, lymphatic drainage and mobilizing adhered tissue.

Essential oils can be used to revitalize and de-stress the fascia and muscles, working quickly to break down inflamed, fibrous tissue, removing toxins from the painful area. Essential oils also have an analgesic effect, relaxing the muscles and reducing pain.

Essential oils help with collagen production by reducing free-radical damage. The antioxidant properties of essential oils may also promote collagen growth by both reducing free radicals and increasing collagen cell growth and formation.

Essential oils with detoxing properties help reduce inflammation that may weaken collagen fibers.

Essential Oils for Fascia

The essential oils in our Fascia Release™ blend are uniquely formulated to simultaneously work on physical and psychological levels, working quickly to break down inflamed, fibrous tissue, removing toxins while unraveling deeply held tensions, constrictions and energetic blockages in your tissues to reduce pain, improve blood and lymphatic circulation and release fear, repressed emotions, and tension held in the body (organs, muscles, tendons, bones and joints) or the mind.

Penetrating essential oils, such as the combination of Angelica Root, Black Pepper, Cypress, Elemi, Frankincense, Lavender, Rose, Geranium, Vetiver, Litsea Cubeba, Rosemary and Ylang Ylang work synergistically to create warmth to break up congestion while relaxing tissues and releasing constriction and congestion.  As stress lessens and tightness is relieved, nervous fatigue and feeling overwhelmed are also relieved.

Vetiver helps ground your body so you can safeIy discharge and reIease stagnation and  energy. Vetiver has been found to reduce and relieve inflammation, especially in relation to your circulatory and nervous system. A 2005 study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry showed that vetiver oil was high in antioxidants that possessed free radical scavenging benefits, which can help reIease stagnation and congestion in your fascia.

Black Pepper helps warm the body and stimulate circulation, increasing blood flow to your tissues and your fascia. Black Pepper contains large amounts of limonene, a terpene thought to stimulate circulation, warm fascia and break up congestion and stagnation.

Black pepper and its active compound piperine have been found to enhance circulation, increasing blood flow to your tissues.  Piperine helps stimulate digestive enzymes, enhance digestive capacity, and increase absorption in the intestines, and also significantly reduces gastrointestinal food transit times. This means that your cells are better able to utilize nutrients and healing remedies when piperine is added, so much so that it is often added to supplement formulations to enhance the effectiveness of the supplement. Dr. Datis Kharrazian, a Harvard-trained clinical researcher, found that adding black pepper to his supplement formulations increased the absorption 200 to 400 percent.

Cypress helps to improve circulation and contraction of the blood vessels, making it easier to stimulate blood flow and release fascia restrictions. Cypress essential oil is high in the compound α-pinene exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in research which helps with blood flow. Cypress also helps to balance and calm the nervous system and work as an antispasmodic agent.  What’s more, Cypress essential oil has a diuretic and detoxifying action and can help to flush out toxins from the body, which helps promote better blood flow and circulation, relaxing tissues and releasing fascia constriction and congestion.

Frankincense has long been heralded for its anti-inflammatory, stress reducing and pain-relieving properties. Research shows frankincense, and its anti-inflammatory constituent alpha-pinene, significantly inhibit inflammation and enhance immune supporting properties, including healthy circulation. The chemical constituent borneol possesses anesthetic and anti-spasmodic properties.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine, frankincense of Boswellia carterii is commonly used as a remedy for improving blood circulation and relieving pain.

Resin essential oils, such as frankincense, help you ground your energy so you better release fascia restrictions from a clear and centered place.  Frankincense is especially useful for relieving feelings of grief or emotional trauma and for relieving nervous tension and stress related conditions.

Litsea cubeba supports clear expression of emotional needs in a more constructive manner, releases negative emotions and promotes relaxation, mental clarity and restful sleep. A 2007 study found that Rosemary oil rapidly reduced the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva in minutes just by smelling it – offering one of the best ways to help alleviate and control stress in the body. Rosemary also naturally alleviates allergic responses and calms muscle spasms. A small study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacol suggested that rosemary essential oil can inhibit muscle contractions of the trachea caused by histamine.

Ylang Ylang has strong antidepressant properties and it helps to bring the emotions into proper balance.  It is known to soothe the nervous system, calm the mind, relieve mental fatigue, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
