Essential Oils for Clearer Thinking

By Jodi Cohen

A woman wearing glasses and a white shirt.

If your thinking has gotten a bit foggy – perhaps you misplace your keys, or your wallet, forget names or can’t remember what you were looking for after you walk into a room, it might help you use essential oils for clearer thinking.  It helps to understand the regions of the brain that contribute to clear thinking.

Your brain responds to your thoughts and feelings through your hypothalamus, a pearl size region of your brain located just above your brain stem.  Your hypothalamus controls all hormonal messages for your endocrine, stress, digestive and nervous systems. It also oversees your body’s stress response and certain metabolic processes and activities of your autonomic nervous system, including your thirst, hunger, and body temperature.

How the Hypothalamus Contributes to Clear Thinking

Your hypothalamus also plays an important role responding to your emotions and thoughts, which impacts how you function emotionally and intellectually.  It directs your endocrine system to secrete the hormones responsible for organizing your body to deal with focus and learning.  Similarly, your hypothalamus alerts the rest of the brain to release chemicals like serotonin and glutamate to help with the process of building a new memory.

When your hypothalamus is in balance, it secretes chemicals that facilitate the feeling of peace, rest and clear thinking.  Your brain can then respond by secreting the correct formula of neurotransmitters to transmit electrical impulses for thought building and clear thinking.

On the flip side, stress related thoughts, like anxiety or fear, shift your brain’s focus to protection and survival,  reducing your ability to process and think clearly.  Stress triggers your hypothalamus to release chemicals that can make your thinking chaotic and foggy.

These chemical signals are synthesized and secreted based on information received from different internal and external stimuli.  Your hypothalamus first takes in the information, like monitoring your organs, and then sends out appropriate hormonal signals to bring the body back into balance.

Supporting the Hypothalamus for Clear Thinking

This means your hypothalamus needs to be functioning optimally for the appropriate signals to both be sent and received.  Unfortunately, chronic and prolonged stress or toxicity can compromise the ability of the hypothalamus to receive clear signals – think of a poor cell phone connection – which then compromises it ability to send out the appropriate hormonal signals.

For example, when the hypothalamus is in balance, it gets the signal that the right volume of cortisol has been released, then sends the signal to stop releasing additional cortisol. If the hypothalamus is compromised in its ability to receive the signal that sufficient levels of cortisol have been reached, this can in turn throw off the signals sent to the adrenals, causing them to continue releasing excessive cortisol.

When the hypothalamus is out of balance, it can negatively impact:

  • Clear Thinking
  • Adrenal Function
  • Thyroid Function
  • Hunger impulses
  • The ability to handle stress
  • All endocrine Function (including the sexual organs)

Essential Oils for Clearer Thinking

To help return the hypothalamus to the balance, apply 1 drop of Vibrant Blue Oils Hypothalamus™ to the forehead right above the third eye (right above the nose between eyebrows and hairline) up to 6 times daily.  The blends also helps to wake up intuition and connect with the heart center, when applied on the sternum over the heart (it might feel a bit tender on the spot), and directly behind the earlobe (where ear connects to the head).
