Essential Oils for ADD/ADHD

By Jodi Cohen

A young child focused intently on drawing at a colorful table in a bright and cheerful classroom setting.

Difficulty focusing?

Controlling impulses?

Sitting Still?

I’ve been there.  i know and love that child! The intense energy, lack of focus and impulse control can be exhausting. Essential Oils for ADD/ADHD may be able to help, as well as changing the diet.

I don’t know about you, but I took every parenting course on the planet and nothing seemed to work. My big queue trick was to point to my nose while directing him to “look at my nose buddy”.  Even that felt like a stretch of focus. That is, until I started removing inflammatory foods from the diet.

Success!  Within a week of changing the diet, he could look at my nose, control impulses, play quietly and sleep!.

I get how hard it is to control diet, especially with the temptation of trading lunches, after sports snacks, playdates, birthday parties and school celebrations.

The good news is that Vibrant Blue Oils can help support optimal focus and attention.

Essential Oils for ADD/ADHD

Gut Healing Oils: I firmly believe that attention issues are often gut issues and dietary changes are a critical aspect of healing the underlying inflammation. Oils that help support optimal digestion are our Parasympathetic® blend applied to the vagal nerve (on mastoid bone behind earlobe) before meals and Intestinal Mucosa™  rubbed clockwise around the belly button 2-3 times daily. If fat digestion is a problem (biggest clue is floating stools), also consider Gall Bladder™  applied to the gall bladder before meals.

Calming Oils: Many children with ADD/ADHD present as hyper-active.   My favorite calming oil is our Adrenal® blend that you can smell or apply mid-back above kidneys and always dilute a bit with coconut oils or olive oil for kids. If sleep is an issue, our Circadian Rhythm® blend applied before bed to the top of the head and on skull just above the top of the ears. Finally, our Calm™ blend  can work very quickly when smelled, applied to the heart or sprayed in the air.

Oils for Focus: Healing the gut and reducing gut inflammation can reduce systemic inflammation (including brain inflammation) which will help with focus. Other oils that work well are Attention™, Brain Boost™Focus™ and Citrus oils, including Lemon™ oil and Orange™ oil.

Children are often very intuitive when it comes to Oils. What tends to smell good to them is often what will work best for them. Just as we often crave meat when we need iron, our bodies are often attracted to the smells that will work best for us. Children seem more connected to this internal guidance than adults, so when in doubt, let them pick their smell.
