By Jodi Cohen

Every year, my daughter gives me a long list of essential oils that she wants to bring with her to summer camp.  She knows that the Essential Oils for Summer Camp help ward off bugs, heal bug bites and sunburn, reduce pain and inflammation from sports injuries, reduce anxiety and promote sleep better than any drugs she might find at the nurses station.

So in response to popular demand, I am sharing my daughter’s Top 12 Essential Oils for Summer Camp.

1. Parasympathetic®

Her secret weapon for anxiety and digesting the sometime indigestible camp food by applying over the vagus nerve, behind the earlobe on the mastoid bone.  The Parasympathetic® blend of clove and lime can also be used for its antiseptic, antibacterial, analgesic properties which make it great for headaches, toothaches and even painful joints and muscles. It also aids in relieving any digestive discomfort, including nausea or constipation.

2.  Calm™

Helps alleviate feelings of homesickness and the anxiety of a new experience, especially when you don’t know many people (or possibly any one in your cabin).  To help alleviate anxiety, worries, or feelings of overwhelm, apply Calm™ over the heart or on the wrists to smell throughout the day.  You can also apply on the bottom of the feet to help you unwind after an overactive or stressful day.

3. Circadian Rhythm®

Sleeping at sleep away camp can always be a challenge.  You are in a different environment, surrounded by a lot of people who you may or may not know.  The temperature might be less than ideal and the mattress might not be comfortable.  My daughter actually brought 4 bottles of Circadian Rhythm® to help her and her bunk mates (and even her counselors) fall asleep during summer camp.  When I pick her up at the end of the summer, I am always barraged by other moms asking to order this blend.  To trigger the natural release of the sleep hormone melatonin, apply Circadian Rhythm® on the top of the skull, above the ears and very back of the head.

4.  Sleep™

This gentle relaxing formula works incredibly well with the Circadian Rhythm® blend to help the body relax and unwind at the end of a busy camp day.  Just apply Sleep™ to the nape of the neck or bottom of the feet.

5.  Nerve Repair™

Nerve Repair™ helps relieve all types of pain, cramps or spasms, including joint and back pain or any kind of physical exertion.  Its active ingredient of Helichrysum™ oil makes it a great blend for bruising, sprains, and swelling. Any injury that does not have broken skin can be treated with Nerve Repair™ blend. Its analgesic properties help make bumps and bruises less painful, heal more quickly and reduce any black or blue discoloration.  This blend can also be used to treat shock, heal bruises, help with broken bones, help with allergies, and is beneficial against infections and viruses.

6.  Lavender™

Lavender™ is great for almost every first aid need. It helps heal minor cuts and burns, relieves insomnia, reduces stress and anxiety and is a powerful antihistamine. You can also use it for bug bites, bruises, sleep deprivation, allergies and inflammation. It can sooth skin irritations and take the pain out of sunburns, bee stings, hives and other allergic skin reactions (especially when combined with colloidal silver).

7.  Anti Inflammatory™

Anti Inflammatory™ blend is amazing for treating any kind of inflammation, including relieving sore or cramping muscles and easing any kind of aches or pains.   The anti-inflammatory properties of this blend are helpful for burns, bee stings nettle rashes, and other injuries. It also works wonders on stiff joints or tendons, helps to ease a headache and calm an allergic reaction.  My daughter’s favorite usage for this blend is for purely cosmetic reasons, when applied to the bottom of the feet before bed, it helps heal pimples and blemishes while you sleep.

8. Purification™

Purification™ blend is great for purifying the air, keeping bugs at bay as a mosquito repellent and even taking the sting out of insect bites.  We combine it with water to make our own non-toxic bug spray.

9. Tea Tree™

Tea Tree™ oil can be used as a first aid ointment.  It is useful for all kinds of skin wounds and abrasions or irritations from a scraped knee or bug bites to athlete’s foot.   Its anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-bacterial properties make it a good choice for all types of infections. It aids in immune function and supports against throat and respiratory pathogens, and helps with slivers in the skin.  It is also a great on the go disinfectant and can be applied on scrapes, minor cuts and small infected areas to clean up and disinfect the wound.

10. Digest™

Let’s face it, camp food leaves something to be desired.  Instead of suffering the minor digestive discomfort from eating heavily processed foods, my kids have learned to apply Digest™ over their stomachs after camp meals to help ease any digestive discomfort, pain or illness.  It also works well for food poisoning, stomach cramping or pain.

11. Peppermint™

Peppermint™ can be energizing, cooling and great for indigestion, nausea, motion sickness or cramps.   It also works wonders for minimizing pain, including headaches, fevers, and even muscle aches, joint pain and bruising. Peppermint™ is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, can be used for shock, colds, colic, and heartburn. It is also good to use for bug bites or bee stings as it helps reduce swelling.  As an added bonus, it can also help keep pests, like ants  away from your picnic table.

12. Lemon™

Lemon™ has natural antiseptic and disinfectant properties and can be used to freshen and clean almost any surface.  It can also be used to help take the sting out of insect bites and  to help freshen the air and offset unappealing odors, like that of an outhouse.
