Essential Oils for Heart Coherence

By Jodi Cohen

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

– Antoine de Saint-Exupery

One of my favorite strategies for courageously navigating unexpected challenges is try to live through the heart instead of the head. I recently learned that the word courage is derived from “Coeur” the French word for heart.  Courage can help you weather through uncertainty and stress.  In fact, I find that courage has more to do with the ability to speak or act from the heart and have the strength to stand up for your heart-felt beliefs, than actual physical strength or bravado.

Heart Coherence

While heart health is often associated with the physiological function of pumping blood to every cell and every organ in the body, your heart plays a much larger role in your body – It integrates and balances the physical, emotional, and mental body.

This is known as Heart Coherence, or “the state when the heart, mind and emotions are in energetic alignment and cooperation,” according to Dr. Rollin McCraty, the Research Director for the HeartMath Institute.   McCraty elaborates that heart coherence “is a state that builds resiliency – personal energy is accumulated, not wasted – leaving more energy to manifest intentions and harmonious outcomes.”

HeartMath research demonstrates that the heart actually sends more messages to the brain than the brain sends to the heart, further indicating the important role that the heart plays in balancing our body.

For example, the heart plays host to 40,000 sensory neurons that enable it to learn, remember, and make decisions independent of the brain.  The heart communicates to the brain and the body through these nervous system connections, as well as through hormones that are produced in the heart and released into the blood stream and energetic information from the heart’s electrical and electromagnetic fields.

Your emotions are reflected in your heart rhythm patterns. When you are in a state of fear or anger, your heartbeat reflects that negative energy through a chaotic heart rhythm known as an “incoherent heart rhythm pattern.”

Your heart then sends signals to your brain that influence your mental and emotional experience. More specifically, the type of chemicals released into your body depends upon the quality of the emotional signal sent from the heart to the brain.  Incoherence of the rhythmic activity of your heart inhibits higher cognitive functions such as attention, perception, memory and problem-solving.

Conversely, when you’re experiencing positive emotions like love, joy, gratitude and compassion, you creating a state of heart coherence or “coherent heart rhythm patterns” that look smooth, ordered and stable. Coherent heart patterns help your body’s systems synchronize and work better, enhancing your ability to think clearly, learn, remember, reason and make healthy, thoughtful decisions.

Heart coherence also supports peak physical performance and health, allowing all the organ systems of the body – including your cardiovascular system, immune system, endocrine system and nervous system –   to work together harmoniously and enhance physical, mental and emotional health.  In this way, heart coherence is a powerful tool for resilience.

Heart coherence is associated with improved higher level functioning, lower blood pressure and cortisol levels, and improved immune system function.  It can be strengthened by adding the nutrients the body needs in the form of food or supplements, focusing on positive, peaceful, loving and harmonious thoughts and emotions and applying Vibrant Blue Oils Heart™ blend.

Vibrant Blue Oils  Heart™ blend was designed to harmonize the brain, digestive track and the entire body for optimal communication between the heart, brain and gut to foster balance and optimal health.  To use it, simply apply 2-3 drops over the heart (left side of chest) 2-3 times daily or as needed.

The Benefit of Heart Centered Focus

Your heart connects you to feelings of love, balance, and connection to others. When you process things through your heart (as opposed to your head) you are better able to be kind and compassionate and avoid conflict.  Your heart also helps to support feelings of self-acceptance, self-love, compassion, openness, and unconditional love of others.

Looking at the world through your heart center allows the kindest, most genuine response and helps you avoid the desire to engage in any kind of conflict or argument. Heart centered focus allows you to bear witness and hold space for others and validate their experience without judgement, allowing you to be kind and supportive witness and validate the experience of others without the need to carry their pain for them or diminishing own your voice.

We now have the opportunity to instead envision the world we want to shift into.  A world where there is no scarcity of resources, and therefore no need to fight over resources.  It starts with our intentions and our ability to hold the space for that positive outcome in your heart.  Strengthening your heart with essential oils can help enhance your ability to step into your heart space.

It is far easier to reframe the current narrative away from shame, scarcity and fear toward hope, kindness and optimism from a heart-centered place of kindness, integrity and truth.  There is an opportunity to stop dividing and conquering and allow a global healing if we can all hold space for each other

My intention for this blog is to empower you with the tools to navigate this time through your heart from a place of compassion and respect so you might continue to shine your bright light in the world and use that light to help us all stop tearing each other down and start collaborating to rebuild a more loving, kind, inclusive and supportive future for everyone!

Essential Oils for the Heart

Heart™ balances the heart to enhance compassion and support, integrate and reset all the systems of the body, including supporting feelings of open-heartedness, expansiveness, receptivity while mitigating loneliness, sadness and grief.

The heart integrates and balances the physical, emotional, and mental body, providing blood to every cell and every organ.  It also serves as a complex information processing center, influencing brain function, the nervous system, hormonal system and most of the body’s major organs.

When any part of the body isn’t functioning at an optimal level, the heart has to work harder.  For example, when the body is in a state of stress, it needs more oxygen which increases the heart rate.  The heart is our body’s reset button, but a state of constant stress can fatigue the heart and compromise our ability to reset, leading to inflammation, infections, toxicity and heart disease.  By returning the heart to balance, we support the cardiovascular and circulatory system, regenerate the structure of the heart and helping to reset the homeostatic mechanism for the entire body.

Heart™ blend contains a proprietary blend of organic and/or wild crafted essential oils that helps you show love to others and yourself.  Research has shown that sweet smells, like those found in Heart™ blend,  have been shown to reduce pain by activating the opioid receptors in the brain.

Blue Tansy:

Helps lift physical and mental stagnation, relieving congestion along with anger, anxiety, depression and nervousness agitation to help open your heart and move out energy that no longer serves you.  On a physical level, it helps calm inflammation and neutralize histamine to calm allergic reactions. It helps enhance the properties of the other oils in the blend and will help you relax your mind and body.

Jasmine:

Derived from delicate flower petals, Jasmine may help improve mood, overcome stress, calm anxiety, relieve depression and balance hormones.

Research suggests that jasmine oil positively influences the nervous system and balances the heart, lifting depression and anxiety and calming emotional stress. Jasmine can help support the heart, by regulating heart rate, blood pressure and breathing.

In fact, jasmine was found to be “as good as Valium at calming the nerves with none of the side effects,” according to a report in the Journal of Biological Chemistry  which examined the impact of hundreds of fragrances on the brain.  Of all the fragrances tested, jasmine had the greatest effect on the calming neurotransmitter GABA.  In fact, it increased GABA’s effect by more than five times and worked better than drugs that modify GABA — sedatives, relaxants, and sleeping pills — minus their side effects.

“We have discovered a new class of GABA receptor modulator which can be administered parentally and through the respiratory air,” according to the head of the research team, Professor Hanns Hatt.  He further noted that  “applications in sedation, anxiety, excitement and aggression relieving treatment and sleep induction therapy are all imaginable. The results can also be seen as evidence of a scientific basis for aromatherapy.”

Another controlled study compared the effects of nightly inhalation of jasmine and lavender EOs on sleep patterns, alertness the following day, and mood and cognitive function in the morning following sleep. Notably, jasmine essential oil inhalation was associated with greater sleep efficiency than the control and quicker performance on the cognitive test, as well as lower levels of anxiety and vigor in the morning, suggesting its ability to increase relaxation.

Jasmine oil also known as a natural aphrodisiac for its libido-boosting and mood elevating qualities, capable of increasing physical signs of arousal — such as breathing rate, body temperature, blood oxygen saturation, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers found that diluted jasmine oil applied on the stomach increased sexual arousal in forty healthy adult women. It also had a stimulating and uplifting effect on the volunteers.

Neroli:

One of the top oils for supporting you through depression and anxiety disorders. Neroli helps calm nervous tension, stress related conditions, and emotional problems. It lifts the mood and helps relieve nervous tension.

Extracted from blossoms of the bitter orange tree, neroli is high in the chemical constituent linalool which is known for its calming, sedative, anticonvulsant, and anxiolytic (antianxiety) properties found in many essential oils derived from flowers and spice plants which are known to help reduce stress and anxiety.

In one clinical trial, researchers found that the inhalation of neroli oil helps relieve menopausal symptoms, reduce blood pressure and balance endocrine system which helps control the release of stress hormones like cortisol.   The study which evaluated how inhaling neroli for just five minutes on five separate days affected sixty-three healthy postmenopausal women and discovered that it significantly lowered diastolic blood pressure and improved pulse rate and estrogen concentrations as well as lowering serum cortisol, which is a hormone marker for stress. Another study confirmed that neroli contains anxiolytic properties, noting that a blend of lavender, Roman chamomile, and neroli “significantly lower anxiety” and improved sleep quality.

Roman Chamomile:

A natural anti-histamine, Roman Chamomile can help promote the health of your physical heart.  Roman chamomile contains high levels of flavonoids, or plant secondary metabolites, that have been shown to significantly reduce mortality from coronary heart disease when taken internally.

The flavonoids present in Roman chamomile essential oil are believed to lower blood pressure and have a relaxing effect on the heart. On an emotional level, Roman chamomile essential oil has been used as a mild sedative to calm nerves and reduce anxiety by promoting relaxation.

2013 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that an  essential oil blend including lavender, Roman chamomile and neroli reduced anxiety levels and improved the sleep quality of patients in an intensive care unit compared to conventional nursing intervention.  Similarly, a 2006 study found that inhaling Roman Chamomile essential oil promoted sleep with calmness and drowsiness among healthy volunteers. Inhalation of chamomile is believed to offset a stress-induced increase in the levels of adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) hormone, which is released by the pituitary gland to trigger the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

According to a 2005 study published in Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin,  chamomile extracts exhibit benzodiazepine-like hypnotic activity. A significant decrease in the time it took to fall asleep was observed in rats who received chamomile extract at a dose of 300 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

Spruce:

Derived from the leaves of the spruce tree, Spruce essential oil was used by Native Americans in meditation sessions for its calming effects.  Spruce essential oil can also help clear emotional clutter from your heart and your energetic field. It may help stimulate your nervous system and boost your mental and physical energy level. Spruce oil is high in monoterpenes, which are known to help you feel mentally grounding, stimulate your heart, and help release anxiety and stress.

Nervine (calms and soothes nerves), supports adrenal gland function

Apply 2-3 drops of Heart™ over the heart (left side of chest) 2-3 times daily to calm and uplift the heart and the body. During times of intense stress and fatigue, use as often as is needed (every 20 -30 minutes).
