Essential Oils for Pregnancy

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the natural, highly concentrated essences extracted from specific herbs in their living state for their healing capabilities.

When properly used, essential oils can help support many challenges during pregnancy, including:

Morning Sickness/Nausea

To help ease nausea or morning sickness, just smelling Vibrant Blue Oils Digest blend can often help. It helps toxins flow out of the system and often relieves nausea. Single oils such as Spearmint, Peppermint (with caution) and Ginger are also good choices. Smelling citrus blends like Lemon, Grapefruit, and Orange can also help relieve morning sickness.

Fatigue

To combat fatigue associated with pregnancy, consider smelling Peppermint (with caution), or Histamine Balance.

Swelling

To help reduce painful swelling, apply Histamine Balance, Orange, Lemon, Cypress, Bay Laurel or Eucalyptus Radiata on the bottom of the feet.

Pain

For Pregnancy related Back Pain or Sciatic Nerve Pain, consider Peppermint (with caution) or Histamine Balance.

Mood

Liver Support, Hormone Balance, Adrenal, Lavender, Rose, Calm, Lavender, Chamomile, Orange, Rose, Geranium are all great options to shift a grumpy, sad or anxious mood. Just smelling these oils can help relieve stress and support calm.

As long as your pregnancy is going well, it’s fine for you to use the following single oils:

Rose
Chamomile (Roman, German, Cape)
Geranium
Eucalyptus Radiata
Neroli
Lavender
Lemon
Frankincense
Copaiba
Australian Sandalwood
Peppermint (with caution)
Black pepper
Ylang ylang

The responsible and knowledgeable use of essential oils during pregnancy poses no risk to mom or baby. When used properly, essential oils are very safe for use during pregnancy and can help support the physical, mental and emotional challenges that occur during pregnancy.

Keep These Safety Considerations In Mind When Using Essential Oils During Pregnancy

Avoid Internal Consumption – Some essential oils can be toxic to the baby if ingested. It is important not to ingest ANY essential oils while you are pregnant.

Less Is More – Heavily dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil) during pregnancy. We recommend a dilution of under 1% (6 drops essential oil per 1 oz. of carrier oil).    This goes for the diffuser as well. Try to limit it to short intervals.

Use Conservatively – Intense daily use is not recommended.  Try to just use the oils when you   really need them.

Avoid essential oils that are contra-indicated during pregnancy, including:

  • Anise Seed and Fennel
  • Oregano
  • Birch and Wintergreen
  • Vitex or Chaste Tree Carrot, Cinnamon Bark, Clove and Myrrh
  • Sage, Mugwort, Hyssop Pinocamphone, Cedar leaf (thuja) and Pennyroyal
  • Lemony scent essential oils, like Lemon balm (melissa), Lemon verbena, Lemongrass, Litsea Cubeba

NOTE: Use recommended essential oils via inhalation at very low amounts, or heavily diluted, when applied topically.
